UNDERSTANDING THE IMPORTANCE OF WOMEN POWER! |
|||||
|
With women starting new companies at an unprecedented rate and with more occupying the corner office as CEOs and top managers, clearly the demographics of the executive ranks are changing. Is there a new formula for success? What resources are available for women entrepreneurs? Are there lessons to be learned? And what does that emerging trend mean for entrepreneurs and investors? While stereotypes can be dangerous, there’s no doubt that the growing management and commercial power of women will have a profound impact on business and society. It has been noted, for example, that women are programmed for collaboration while men are wired for competition. If that’s true, the culture of women-owned businesses may be markedly different from those managed by men. Women Power...It’s changing how business gets done. |

With a rebounding economy pushing energy prices up, and with new technologies for advanced drilling and fracturing creating more efficient techniques for extraction, there is renewed interest in the giant, 575-mile Marcellus Shale bed of natural gas that runs between New York State through Pennsylvania and West Virginia. That’s a lot of energy to be harnessed and a lot of economic activity to be generated – and with it, real opportunities for Western Pennsylvania entrepreneurs and investors to find success serving the energy industry and its myriad of spinoffs. The questions we’d like to ask are simple: Who will prosper as Marcellus Shale extraction revs up – and how? Will it be you? |

Now, with a new generation energized and motivated to have a positive impact on the world, and with older professionals looking for new meaning in their work, there is exploding interest in social entrepreneurship. Lots of folks, it seems, want to do good while doing well. And Pittsburgh, with our long history of robust foundations and community activism, is poised to become a hotbed of social entrepreneurship. But while many recognize the opportunity of applying business principles to achieve both social improvement and a healthy bottom line, social entrepreneurship is not for everyone. TOO MUCH BOOM? COPING WITH EXPLOSIVE GROWTH |

Strange as it may seem in these still-recessionary times, there is such a thing as too much success. It’s a nice problem to have. Yet unexpectedly strong demand can be every bit as much of a challenge as a scarcity of customers. A market poised for unbridled growth can stymie strategy as much as dwindling revenues can. Responding to these conditions calls on an entrepreneur’s ability to orchestrate scalability, to astutely target the most suitable of opportunities, and to smartly allocate resources - all while delivering a consistent level of service or product. Pittsburgh’s Ty Morse is in this position. His startup, Songwhale, which distributes digital content for handheld devices, occupies a market poised for explosive takeoff. It’s not just that adults are following their kids into the texting and content-downloading lifestyle; it’s also that banks, airlines, entertainment providers, ad agencies and any number of other consumer and B-to-B enterprises are recognizing the power of direct, immediate communications and content distribution. Indeed, our cell phones and mobile devices increasingly will be our primary means of interacting with our world--personal and business--as Morse and others in his industry continue to expand the type of content delivered to us. You are joining your fellow entrepreneurs from across Western Pennsylvania as we listen to how Morse, a twenty-something businessman, musician and songwriter, is dealing with the challenge of fast growth in the digital content delivery space. |

NANOTECHNOLOGY: THIS REVOLUTION IS JUST GETTING STARTED |

Imagine being able to go back in time, back to the dawn of the digital age. Don’t you wish you had the foresight then to see just what a dramatic impact falling digital processing and data storage costs – not to mention the personal computer itself – would have on business and life. Whole new industries would be developed, and others would become obsolete. Manufacturing processes would be forever reconfigured. Powerful new hubs of innovation and commerce – from California’s Silicon Valley to India’s Bangalore – would emerge. Nothing would be the same. We stand at such a threshold again. The nanotechnology revolution – still in its infancy but already transforming how we make and build things, research new ideas, deliver healthcare, share information and much more – promises to be every bit a catalyst for profound change as was the early microchip. If you want to put nanotechnology to work for you – or even just understand its ramifications for your clients and our region – we are pleased that you joined us and other thoughtful, forward-looking leaders at Enterprise Forum’s program on how regional businesses are pursuing the promise of nanotechnology and how it will shape the future of our area’s economy. Our panel is composed of experts working at the heart of regional nanotechnology. They bridge the technological and commercial sides of this emerging industry. |
